Notre Dame College Canteen : A Battlefield for "সিঙ্গারা"

 "কফি হাউসের সেই আড্ডাটা আজ; আর নেই আজ আর নেই" a classic song by Manna Dey strikes us every time and takes us back to fantastic occasions spent with our friends in special places. For the students of Notre Dame College it's their college canteen, a place which every Notredamian cherishes. The place where memories are made.



The canteen started its journey in a separate building. However, back in 2020, the canteen was transferred to the ground floor of the newest building of Notre Dame College, named after the 8th principal, Father Pishoto. Now it has a bigger space than before. The place for teachers and students are separated from each other.



The menu includes a range of foods. However, the most famous item is the "সিঙ্গারা". Every student is obsessed with it. During recess the canteen becomes a battlefield of students who can get "সিঙ্গারা". Friends gather around to enjoy this meal together.

Aside from "সিঙ্গারা" , "আলুর চপ", "প্যাটিস", burger,pizza ,cake,tea,"বিরিয়ানি","খিছুরি" etc are also found. But "সিঙ্গারা" is the most famous food of this canteen.The queue in front of the counter is huge. Students run to the canteen for "সিঙ্গারা". Students are also seen to study here drinking tea.


In the end, I just want to say that the canteen will remain in our memories, written in golden letters. While passing in front of the college, I only remember my friends sitting in the canteen, and the melody by Rabindranath Tagore comes to mind.

"পুরানো সেই দিনের কথা ভুলবি কিরে হায়।।ও সেই চোখের দেখা, প্রাণের কথা; সে কি ভোলা যায়? ।।আয়, আরেকটিবার আয় রে সখা, প্রাণের মাঝে আয়।।মোরা সুখের-দু:খের কথা কব, প্রাণ জুড়াবে তায়।"

Meghdol: The Pied Pipers of Dhaka, from Dhaka, for Dhaka

But 9 out of 10 Bangla music lovers will tell you that there might be many artists, many bands but none comes close to Meghdol. It is Meghdol where everyone unites as an experience like no other, a concept never heard before. A group of students from Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka university, namely  Shibu Kumer Shil, Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, Rasheed Sharif Shoaib and Masud Hasan Ujjal ,  used to work together in a designing shop at the basement of Shahbag's Aziz Super Market.
